A blog to share barn owl and other wildlife and general news about the Retreat and its environment.
We've been monitoring a Canada goose nest (from a distance - the gander is very protective!). I thought the time was up for their incubation and hatching, and today new goslings appeared for the first time.
Follow the more⦠button to see the video collage of some of their movements today.
The video shows:
- The six goslings leaving the nest for the first time
- A view of the geese and goslings a few minutes after they crossed the and reached the field gate.
- The geese squeezed between the bars of the gate, but the goslings couldn't work out what to do, perhaps because the gap in the bars used by the parents was too high above them for them to reach. (Eventually they realised they could squeeze under the bottom bar.)
- The party reassembled the other side of the gate.
- Swimming across another pond
- Resting and foraging by the pond
NB there is wind noise on these videos - it has been a windy day.
